SAN DIEGO-Construction is complete on the first of three cottages for troubled children at the San Diego Center for Children in Kearny Mesa.

The project was designed by the San Diego- and Los Angeles-based architecture and interior design firm, Austin Veum Robbins Parshalle, according to Eduardo Savigliano, project director.

Located at the center’s 3002 Armstrong St. property, the new 6,967-sf cottage is designed to house 16 children in single-occupancy sleeping rooms.

It features two large shared living areas, which include kitchen/food preparation facilities, a den that serves as a visitation/counseling room, a laundry facility and patio area.

“The new cottages are designed to look and feel welcoming for the children, and to emulate a family residence, with craftsman-style detail,” Savigliano says.

The San Diego Center for Children is underwriting the development of the cottages, which replace decrepit buildings dating back to the 1950s. The campaign involves donations totaling $4.3 million contributed by the Serenity Fund, Dr. Irwin and Joan Jacobs and John and Rebecca Moores.
