ORLANDO-The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the deaths of two workers killed by a falling 78-ton, 132-foot long concrete beam as they were guiding the material from a bridge where a state-built bicycle-trail overpass was being constructed.

The Sept. 10 accident was on Neptune Road, Osceola County, 25 miles south of Downtown Orlando.

The beam was being pushed into place on the overpass by a 170-foot tall crane and a 140-foot tall crane. Area construction industry officials tell GlobeSt.com on condition of anonymity that each of the cranes should have had a holding capacity of about 50 tons, enough to hold the concrete beam. OSHA officials couldn’t be reached at GlobeSt.com’s publication deadline.

The cable on the 140-foot crane snapped as the workers were guiding the beam onto the overpass, according to a filed report by the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

The victims, Enrique Aguilar, 22 and David Knight, 32, worked for Leware Construction Co., a 30-year-old, family-owned company in Leesburg, FL, 45 miles northwest of Downtown Orlando. The fatalities were the first in the company’s history.
