CASSVILLE, WS-Mid-America Power is proposing plans for a major 200-megawatt expansion to its coal-fueled electric generating power facility. Mid-America recently unveiled its plans for the Cassville Energy Center as a redevelopment project ofthe existing 53-megawatt E. J. Stoneman Power Plant to members of the village board here.

Mid-America bought the Stoneman Plant in 1996 from Dairyland Power. The plan calls for construction of an additional 200 megawatts of electrical capacity integrated with the existing 53-megawatt Stoneman Plant.

Mid-America is a joint business venture of WPS Power Development of Green Bay, WS, a subsidiary of WPS Resources, and Burns & McDonnell of Kansas City, MO.

“This will greatly help fill the need for additional power in the state and, at the same time, create a real boost for the Cassville economy,” says Richard Heidel, project developer.

Peak construction activity could mean up to 750 workers will be on site during the three to four years the energy center is being built, he says.

A number of regulatory agencies will need to review the project in a process that will be led by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Local zoning agencies, as well as several federal agencies, will also be involved in the decision process, which is expected to take 12 to 18 months.

WPS Power Development is a subsidiary of WPS Resources Corp. whose largest subsidiary is Wisconsin Public Service Corp., the electric and natural gasutility in northeastern and north central Wisconsin. Burns & McDonnell is an international engineering, architectural, construction and environmental servicesfirm headquarters in Kansas City, MO.

A special informational meeting will be held on Sept. 27 in the Cassville High School gym to make residents aware of the project and to seek public input.
