RENTON, WA-Three smokestacks at the Shuffleton Steam Plant will be toppled early Saturday morning, making room for a mixed-use development at the south end of Lake Washington.

City officials say the 148-foot structures will be imploded at 7:15 a.m. The city also expects the trio of towers to destroy part of the power plant too, although the plant’s total demolition work will actually be handled by a different company and a wrecking ball later this month.

The Shuffleton plant was built about 1930 by Puget Sound Power & Light, and served as an oil-fired, steam-powered electrical generation plant in the mid-1950s. It has not been used since 1989.

Bellevue-based SECO Development bought the 17.5acre property two years ago, and has begun construction of 188 apartments. The company also has applied to the city of Renton for permits for the second phase.

Wright Runstad & Company will develop the 750,000-sf office portion of the project and received site plan approval for that last year.
