SAN DIEGO-San Diego ranks 13th among the nation’s least-affordable metropolitan areas for rental housing.

The average San Diego County worker must earn more than three times the state minimum wage to pay the rent on a typical two-bedroom apartment, according to the report released Monday by the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

Last, year, San Diego ranked 25th on the list. But the $19.46 an hour a San Diegan must earn to afford rental housing is up 21% from 12 months ago, according to the study. California is the least-affordable state in the country in which to rent. In San Francisco, workers must make $33.60 per hour to afford a two-bedroom rental.

The study by the watchdog group is based on housing/wage standards issued by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Housing is defined as “affordable” if it costs no more than 30% of gross household income.
