SEATTLE-The Urban Land Institute has named Harbor Steps, a four-tower, missed-use redevelopment complex in Downtown, one of the top developments in the world. Harbor Properties, the project’s developer, received the Award for Excellence at the ULI fall meeting in Boston.

“This award is the final chapter of a story about how one company’s vision, started some 30 years ago, can result in the creation of a magnificent project that has proven critical to Seattle’s Downtown community,” says Denny Onslow, Harbor Properties Development president. “We share this esteemed recognition with our city leaders, Seattle residents and visitors, and most importantly, our project partners for helping bring Harbor Steps to life.”

Harbor Steps was recognized by ULI as this year’s best Large-Scale (Multi-Family) Residential project, an award-competition category defined as having at least 250 units. Harbor Steps has a total of 734 apartments.

Harbor Steps was first conceptualized in the early 1970s as a new breed of urban development, a mixed-use project offering retail, restaurants, housing, office space and a spacious, community-based park where people could stop and enjoy the pleasures of Downtown. The area, for many years characterized by pawnshops, flophouses and adult cabarets, could be redeveloped, Harbor thought, and would serve as the ideal connection between downtown and Seattle’s waterfront. Harbor Properties partners agreed.

Established in 1979, the ULI Awards for Excellence program evaluates real estate development projects on the basis of financial viability, resourceful use of land, design, relevance to contemporary issues and sensitivity to the community and environment. Winning projects reflect the Washington, D.C-based organization’s mission to “provide responsible leadership in the use of land in order to enhance the total environment.”
