SAN ANTONIO-Call centers come and call centers go and that’s what’s happened in San Antonio. Menlo Logistics Inc., a Redwood City, CA-based company, said today that it has opened a call center in San Antonio to serve a new customer. That comes after last week’s announcement that Dallas-based Weblink Wireless Inc. would close its San Antonio call center.

Menlo Logistics, as its name says, provides logistics services and technology. It announced Takata, a manufacturer of automotive safety systems based in Auburn Hills, MI, is a new customer. Menlo will help Takata track products through a Web-based system. Most of Takata’s North American manufacturing operations are in Mexico, making San Antonio a good location to set up a call center to coordinate activities.

Weblink Wireless, on the other hand, is closing its San Antonio call center and cutting the center’s 151 jobs as part of a restructuring effort. The San Antonio call load will be handled by the company’s call centers in Amarillo and Dallas. Overall, the company, which provides wireless e-mail, wireless instant messaging, information on demand and traditional paging services, will cut 232 jobs. It blamed the cuts on softness in its retail business.
