LANSING, MI-Michigan Gov. John Engler has approved spending $61 million to pay for the state’s environmental enhancement programs, including using Clean Michigan Initiative dollars and other restricted funds to address contaminated site cleanups, water pollution control and wellhead protection activities. CMI is a $675-million environmental bond proposed by Engler and approved by voters in 1998.

“Our steadfast commitment to Michigan’s environment is paying off,” Engler says. “We are a national leader in such areas as brownfield redevelopment and ridding waterways of contaminated sediments.”

Senate Bill 291 provides:* $35.7 million for the cleanup and redevelopment of contaminated properties.

* $15 million to address leaking storage tanks.

* $4 million for the Municipal Landfill Grant program, which supports environmental response activities at certain municipal solid waste landfills.

* $3 million for the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, which encourages environmentally sound practices on agricultural lands to improve water quality and wildlife habitat.

* $2.4 million for the Abandoned Well Management Program, which assists communities in locating and plugging abandoned wells to avoid contaminating public water supply wells.
