LIVERPOOL-There’s a new development agency to breathe life into the poorest parts of the city of Liverpool. The Liverpool Land Development Company is based on the award-winning success of the Speke Garston Development Company which is working with Liverpool City Council to create the new organisation.

The new organisation – to be headed by SGDC chairman Ray O’Brien – will work with private-sector partners to create new development sites and premises and attract investment and jobs to the city.

It will operate in those areas of the city – dubbed Strategic Spatial Development Areas – which have been identified as areas with the greatest potential for growth using Objective 1 funding. These areas are: The Atlantic Gateway in the north Liverpool Docklands; the Eastern Approaches – the area around Wavertree Technology Park; Gillmoss and Kirkby; and the Speke/Halewood area. The company’s wide-ranging brief will also include environmental and infrastructure improvements.

The new organisation builds on the work of SGDC since it was established four years ago. SGDC has attracted more than £200 million of private-sector investment to south Liverpool and helped to generate more than 2,700 new jobs in the area.

Its flagship projects include the Estuary Commerce Park – Merseyside’s most prestigious business location – and the Boulevard Industry Park next to Jaguar’s plant. Other key schemes include the transformation of the former Bryant and May factory into The Match Works business village and The Aerodrome, the former Liverpool Airport terminal which is now a successful hotel and leisure complex.

Work on the citywide development masterplan is expected to get under way this month.
