PORTLAND, OR-Government officials will hold a public workshop Saturday to discuss design and development standards for urban renewal at the Gateway Regional Center area.

Sponsored by Portland Development Corp. and the Bureau of Planning, the workshop will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Woodland Park Hospital Auditorium, 10300 NE Hancock St. The purpose of the workshop will be to evaluate and change standards, guidelines and zone designations within the area.

Approved by the City Council in June 2001, an advisory committee was formed to develop a vision for the area’s renewal plan. That committee consists of more than 30 citizens, property owners, business and neighborhood representatives who are working with city staff to come up with these standards. This is the second of two workshops open to the public.

The Gateway Regional Center consists of 653 acres encompassing three Portland neighborhoods: Hazelwood, Mill Park and Parkrose Heights. Dick Cooley, chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee says: “New pedestrian-oriented street systems, better housing, new mixed-use development, parks and community facilities will all work to enhance the quality of life in this area.”

Current land use in the Gateway Regional Center area includes 32.9% commercial and employment, 18.4% multifamily, 4.4% industrial, 3.8% single-family and 1.4% open space. The area contains the highest-density commercial zoning designation in the city.
