BOSTON-Frank McCourt’s campaign to buy a controlling stake in the Boston Red Sox and build a new ballpark for the team on part of his 25-ace swath of parking lots on the South Boston waterfront appears to have gained momentum. Several South Boston political leaders are reportedly endorsing the plan.

A letter reportedly penned by State Representative Jack Hart and city councilors James Kelly and Michael Flaherty is said to support McCourt and his plan. Steve Crawford, spokesperson for Flaherty tells GlobeSt.com that it was a private letter but he declined to comment any further on its contents. He points out that “Flaherty has been supportive of reviewing plans for a ballpark in south Boston.”

The support by these powerful political officials is important for McCourt in his bid to buy the team and move the ballpark. The other bidders–including TV producer Tom Werner and developer Stephen Karp –have more financial resources than the locally based developer but McCourt’s property could be seen as a valuable asset. The $665-million plan to develop a ballpark at Fenway Park has been at a standstill with local residents have voicing strong opposition and negotiations to purchase the sites for the ballpark breaking down.

Kelly and Hart did not return calls by presstime but until now Kelly has been on the fence about the plan. Hart has not come out for or against the plan until now but he is reportedly quoted as saying that he supports McCourt. A few years, Robert Kraft proposed developing a stadium for the New England Patriots here in South Boston but the lack of political support and the intense local opposition forced him to abandon his plan.
