SAN DIEGO-If current demographic trends continue, the county will generate 300,000 new jobs in the next two decades, posing serious questions for the area’s growth planners, according to a report unveiled by the San Diego Association of Governments. The region is still expected to have about one million more people within 19 years, according to the report.

“The region will continue to grow by some amount because of demographics, the availability of jobs and the region’s natural desirability,” says the study. No region has ever successfully halted population growth.

Local government “does not have control over most of the sources of growth, including the number of births, the number of military personnel, or the amount of foreign immigration.” According to the report, the rate of population growth has been slowing down in the county since the 1980s.
