WINONA, MN-Fastenal, which has opened 155 new stores over the last year, plans to add 11 more in Q4. The Winona, MN-based maker of power tools and other types of industrial products has made the decision to keep expanding its store network despite the economic slowdown in hopes of double-digit sales once the economy recovers.

In the meantime, Fastenal’s sales have done well, but its earnings have been hurt slightly by the opening costs associated with new stores. Fastenal said the stores typically take from 10 months to a year to become profitable. The stores range widely in size from 1,200 sf to 8,000 sf, according to a spokesperson. Fastenal owns 31 of its stores and leases the rest. The company said it likes short leases–up to four year –in case in feels it needs to relocate the stores.
