MANCHESTER-Housing and property group Taylor Woodrow has submitted a planning application to develop a ‘green building’ as part of Macintosh Village, a £130 million ($185 million) mixed-use scheme in Manchester city centre’s Southern Gateway.

Designed by top architect Terry Farrell & Partners, the proposed building will occupy a triangular site overlooking the River Medlock. It will contain 32 private residential units, a 120 place pre-school nursery already pre-let to Kids Unlimited and a doctors’ surgery. The 11-storey cylindrical design is expected to incorporate a number of eco-friendly features covering both the construction and the operation of the building.

Taylor Woodrow claims the building will be a benchmark for low energy environmental design, and it will try to show a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas. This will be achieved by using sustainable energy resources such as geothermal, solar and wind energy. The cylindrical design of the building also helps to retain heat to maximise solar gain with large windows on the southern rim and smaller windows to the north.

Macintosh Village will provide around 500,000 sf of residential accommodation laid out as a mix of 719 apartments, penthouses and live/work units, together with 30,000 sf of commercial space. The plans for the Green Building are due to be considered by Manchester City Council in December 2001.
