DETROIT-Governor John Engler has signed an executive order for bringing the 2002 budget into balance. The strategy includes budget reductions and efficiencies, fund transfers and delaying work projects, as well as the sale of the Northville Psychiatric Hospital for $64 million.

In the wake of the economic downtown, Detroit’s finances are also spiraling out of control, and Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer has proposed to sell about 900 acres of city-owned land in Northville and Plymouth townships.

The city says the land is worth $31.5 million, or $35,000 an acre, on the basis of a recent appraisal. Archer says the city must cut $60 million from the 2001-2002 budget.

“These are challenging times,” Engler says. “This executive order takes the action necessary to provide for the growing number of low-income, seniors and disabled people in need of assistance. It also protects funding for public protection and shields higher education.”
