ALLENTOWN, PA-The long-anticipated redevelopment of downtown Allentown was kick started today with the unveiling of plans for the Plaza at PPL Center, a major commercial project designed to anchor a revitalized CBD.

Developed by PPL Corp. and Liberty Property Trust, the building was designed by New York City-based Robert A.M. Stern Architects. To be situated on a half-acre public plaza and set back roughly 85 feet from Hamilton Street at Ninth Street, the eight-story building features a center atrium open to the roof level and retail space on the first floors. The remaining floors will be office space.

The development is expected to bring about 200 new jobs to downtown Allentown including new retail jobs and positions at PPL EnergyPlus, the company’s energy trading and marketing operation, which will be housed on the top two floors of the building. Ground is expected to be broken on the project next spring with delivery set for early 2003.

Malvern, PA-based Liberty operates more than 51 million sf of office and industrial properties. PPL, based here, generates electricity at power plants in Pennsylvania, Maine and Montana, markets energy throughout the US and Canada and delivers electricity to roughly 6 million customers.
