EAST PALO ALTO, CA-The East Palo Alto City Council revisited a proposed Ikea furniture store topic this week after city attorneys determined last month’s vote did not meet guidelines. The answer was still “no;” of course, so Ikea will have to find another location.

IKEA wanted to build a furniture store on 10-acres situated along Highway 101. The city rejected the idea last month when four city council members deadlocked on the issue. Later, city attorneys said that the issue would have to be revisited as the council had not followed proper voting procedures.

Only three members voted at this week’s meeting. Councilwoman Myrtle Walker disqualified herself because of financial interest in the property. One member still voted no, however, throwing the project back into the garbage bin. Councilwoman Donna Rutherford says she was against the project because of its size — 75-feet tall and totaling 230,000-sf.

Community members at the meeting were divided between those who wanted the $1.8 million in sales tax revenue and some 500 jobs the store would bring, and those who fear it would bring too much traffic congestion.
