ANNAPOLIS, MD-Based on second quarter figures, The National Investment Center for the Seniors Housing & Care Industries (NIC) reports that construction starts for assisted living properties are at the lowest point since 1999, when the organization first began tracking information for this sector. The numbers are the most recent figures amassed from industry companies. The study shows 29 new construction starts in the assisted living sector for the second quarter, compared to a high of 178 in the first quarter of 1999. In addition to the decline in new construction projects, assisted living facilities and nursing homes suffered a decline in occupancy, with nursing homes recording an average 2% drop. But NIC officials expect the negative trend in construction to change for the better. “The good news is that demand is increasing,” says NIC Research Director Harvey Singer. “With little increase in new supply, demand will once again catch up with the existing supply.”
