WASHINGTON, DC-Toledo Ohio-based custom tailor Michael Smith reopens the Connecticut Avenue outlet of “The Custom Shop” after purchasing the company’s name, customer records and website for $379,000 in a bankruptcy proceeding. The doors to the Dupont Circle area shop closed in March.

Smith believes he can revitalize the custom-designed suits and shirts retail chain that dates back to 1937. “Founder Mortimer Levitt built a powerhouse business, but the last two owners were misdirected and under funded,” says Smith, who will serve as the new company CEO. Smith is also reopening two stores in San Francisco and one in Houston. He purchased the reopened stores for an undisclosed amount in an auction. Before the bankruptcy proceedings there were three other Washington DC-area locations: McClean, Virginia’s Tyson’s Galleria, Arlington, Virginia’s Pentagon Square and Montgomery County, Maryland’s White Flint Mall.
