DETROIT-A bond issue approved Nov. 6 by voters will provide $20 million toward theproposed renovation and 110,000-sf expansion of the Detroit Historical Museum in the heart of the city’s Cultural Center. Museum staff members say memories of 20th Century progress will be brought to life in the new Streets of Old Detroit with classic Woodward Avenue landmarks, including Vernors, Hudson’s and the Graystone Ballroom, among others.

A new “Hall of Cultures” will host exhibits about the many cultures and ethnic communities that comprise Metro Detroit. Enhanced educational programming will offer school children fun, interactive ways to learn about their heritage and the history of Detroit. Another $30 million for expansion and renovation will be raised in private funds.

If all the money can be quickly gathered, ground could be broken in 2003. Construction could be finished by the middle of 2005. Neumann/Smith & Associates, Southfield, is serving as project architect. Preliminary sketches feature a four-story glass wall facing Cass Avenue across from the main campus of Wayne State University, according to Guy Snider of the Great Lakes Fabricators and Erectors Association. It would showcase an atrium depicting the facades of historic Detroit buildings. Exhibit space wouldtriple.
