MINNEAPOLIS-More about the fate of the Minnesota Twins baseball team could be unveiled today as the Major League Baseball owners are meeting in Chicago to discuss their previously announced plans to eliminate two teams. The owners appear ready to forge ahead with plans to cut two teams from next year’s schedule.

Although the two teams were not identified, the Twins, Montreal Expos and the two Florida teams appear to be the most likely candidates.

The owners face a rising number of obstacles, especially with regard to the Twins. A Hennepin County judge already has ordered the Twins to honor their lease and play the 2002 season at the Metrodome. The Twins have appealed Judge Harry Crump’s injunction.

The team and the Metrodome’s owner, the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission, have until Wednesday to file arguments before the Minnesota Supreme Court. Also, Congress has scheduled early December hearings to determine whether to strip Major League Baseball of the antitrust exemption that allows it to operate as a monopoly and free from legislative scrutiny.

Also, the Major League Baseball Players Association has filed a grievance over whether contraction is legal under the expired collective bargaining agreement.

Meanwhile, efforts are underway to assemble a group that would buy the Twins from current owner Carl Pohlad, and city and state officials are working on putting together deals to build new stadiums.
