DETROIT-Southeast Michigan kicked off the decade with a total of 54 million sf of nonresidential space either under construction in 2000 or just completed, according to a report released by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments. The report tracks projects which were completed, ongoing or begun in the region during 2000.

Major projects, such as Ford Field, helped Detroit to again capture the region’s No. 1 spot for nonresidential construction. Rounding out the top five by total square feet of floor space are:

* Detroit — 6,368,500 sf

* Romulus — 2,903,079 sf

* Warren — 2,680,143 sf

* Troy — 2,618,132 sf

* Dearborn — 2,605,634 sf

In addition to recording projects, the report categorizes the amount of nonresidential construction by type. The top five categories in 2000 were:

* Industrial/research/hi-tech projects — 17.1 million sf

* Retail — 9 million sf

* Office — 8.3 million sf

* Institutional — 5.6 million

* Warehouse facilities — 4.7 million
