MINNEAPOLIS-Major League Baseball owners took no action on contraction at their meeting Tuesday, apparently due to legal challenges to one of the two teams reputed to be in line for elimination. The owners met in Chicago to discuss their previously announced plans to eliminate two teams.

While they appear to want to go ahead with contraction, they delayed any further announcements. A factor in that decision apparently involves a temporary injunction issued by a Minnesota judge that forces the Twins to fulfill their lease next season at the Metrodome. Twins owner Carl Pohlad has appealed that decision.

Although the owners have not yet identified the teams likely to be eliminated, the Twins and the Montreal Expos are said to be the leading candidates.

Meanwhile, the House Judiciary Committee plans to hold a hearing next week on baseball’s antitrust exemption in Washington. Following the decision by baseball owners to eliminate two teams, legislation was introduced to strip baseball of its 79-year-old exemption from antitrust laws.

Efforts are underway in Minnesota to assemble a group that would buy the Twins from Pohlad, and city and state officials are working on putting together deals to build new stadiums.
