OCEANSIDE, CA-Caltrans has proposed adding another rail along a 1.2-mile section of this north coastal city to relieve overcapacity.

The North County Transit District board of directors, which owns the rail line, will consider the Caltrans proposal within the next few months. Construction is expected to begin next year.

The second track would run east of the current rail from just south of Oceanside Boulevard to Eaton Street, near the southern city limits.

City Manager Steve Jepsen told the city council earlier this week that the project would include a new railroad bridge over Loma Alta Creek. The transit board has long called for two tracks along the entire 41 mile rail line from Oceanside to San Diego.

The rail line carries 41 trains in each direction, considered full capacity.
