SACRAMENTO-Development plans for a supermarket complex with a 100-foot brick tower and upscale apartments have received final City Council approval.

The retail and apartment complex will be built on 19th Street, stretching out from just north of R Street to S Street. The developer, Paul Petrovich, hopes to have the midtown Sacramento complex under construction by next summer.

The tower will be the main point of the project, around which a 50,000-sf supermarket will be developed. The area has not had a supermarket for many years, despite the recent development that has occurred in the area. The downtown and midtown areas are served by small grocery stores.

The developer is expecting little or no protest from the city and community, as residents have been asking for one for a long time. The project has been supported by community groups, the city’s Planning Commission and Design Review Board, and many others.

So far, a grocer has not been selected but the developer has been in negotiation with Safeway, whose design will include a 360-vehicle parking lot and a large grocery store with skylights.

The remainder of the project is undecided, and may include a coffee shop, restaurant and various retail stores. In addition, approximately six upscale two-story apartments will be built above the retail area. This is a significant change from the original 200 apartment complex that was originally planned. With six units, the project will cost about $15 million. The lofts will be about 1,400-sf and will rent for $2,500 — much higher than average rents in the area.
