ST. PAUL, MN-The Guthrie Theater and Minneapolis Planetarium both won funding in the legislature’s recently passed bonding bill, but many expect Gov. Jesse Ventura to line-item veto the funding. The bonding bill overlooked his favored project, a light rail line from the Twin Cities to St. Cloud, MN.

The House-Senate negotiators agreed to provide $24 million in funding for the Guthrie and $9.5 million for the planetarium. But the measure was passed too late to allow the legislators to override an anticipated line-item veto.

In the past 18 months, the Guthrie has raised $59.5 million of its $75 million fundraising target. The theater had asked the state for $35 million. The planetarium, which will be part of the new Minneapolis Central Public Library under development in Downtown, hopes to raise $4 million privately and go back for more funding in the next bonding bill in two years.
