MAPLEWOOD, MN-Retail experts here speculate retail shopping center powerhouse Simon Property Group likely will make some significant renovations to one of its newest properties, the 894,000-sf Maplewood Mall. The mall was part of the Indianapolis-based retail REIT’s portion of the three-way, $5.3-billion deal Rodamco North America, which gave Simon 13 malls for $1.59 billion.

Indianapolis-based Simon had managed the mall for a few years in the 1990s before management switched to Urban Retail Properties.

Maplewood Mall bolstered its position as key player in the Twin Cities retailing scene when in 1996, the mall was able to land a Dayton’s (now Marshall Field’s) anchor. The mall also added a Mervyn’s store the same year. Minneapolis-based Target Corp owns both Marshall Field’s and Mervyn’s.

Maplewood Mall has some 316 stores, and is anchored by Marshall Field’s, Kohl’s, Mervyn’s and Sears.

Simon’s portfolio in Minnesota includes a major stake in the Mall of America in Bloomington and also owns Miller Hill Mall in Duluth.

Through its subsidiary partnerships, Simon now owns or has an interest in 258 properties containing an aggregate of 195 million sf in 36 states.
