DETROIT-The controversial Detroit Intermodal Freight Terminal, a proposed 840-acre project stretching from the Michigan Depot in southwest Detroit to east Dearborn, was scrutinized during a public hearing Monday night. The city of Dearborn planning commission will hear a presentation from the Michigan Department of Transportation about its proposed DIFT, and take testimony from members of the public.

Communities for a Better Rail Alternative, a coalition of more 50 organizations and 500 individual members that oppose the project, will also make a presentation about their proposed alternative to MDOT’s plans.

The city of Dearborn has not taken an official position on the DIFT.

The communities group is proposing an alternative to MDOT’s proposed DIFT that emphasizes improvements to the existing Junction Yard freight terminal. As proposed by MDOT, the DIFT would result in 16,000 additional diesel trucks impacting southwest Detroit and Dearborn, the demolition of 72 businesses and 80 homes, resulting in community fragmentation as well as health and traffic safety impacts, said CBRA members.
