BAYONNE, NJ-The Local Redevelopment Authority is in the early stages of redeveloping the 473-acre former Military Ocean Terminal here, a massive project that’s expected to take two decades and upwards of $32 billion to complete. But first it has to have a transportation infrastructure plan in place.

To address that need, Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Doria and New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey recently teamed up to announce $3 million in federal funding has been received to launch the transportation infrastructure planning process. A team of engineers and consultants is expected to be hired this summer, and proposals are already being reviewed, according to McGreevey.

“The Military Ocean Terminal is being transformed from the largest undeveloped piece of property in New Jersey on New York Harbor into an economic engine for the creation of thousands of construction jobs, full-time and part-time jobs,” McGreevey said when the funding was announced. “None of this can happen without the implementation of a comprehensive transportation infrastructure plan.”

“We welcome the state’s interest in finding additional ways to link the property by land and water to the existing transportation systems in the North Jersey-New York metropolitan area,” Doria added. “This initiative provides an unprecedented opportunity for economic growth.”

Planning for the site is expected to include a combination of road access, rail service and pedestrian and bicycle pathways. As it proceeds, the redevelopment itself will include a combination of residential, office, commercial, maritime and light industrial uses, as well as cultural venues and open space facilities.
