SAN JOSE-The San Jose City Council has unanimously approved an agreement with the CineLux theater chain to reopen the Pavilion movie theaters in Downtown San Jose.

The eight-screen movie theater, built with $4.6 million in public money, has been closed for more than two years since United Artists backed up a truck and moved out in the middle of the night in January 2000.

Councilwoman Cindy Chavez, who represents the downtown area, said the Pavilion’s closure has been a blow to the area.

“The saddest empty window was the UA windows with a few little popcorn kernels. That’s all they left,” Chavez says.

The theater will reopen in mid-November with eight screens and approximately 2,500 seats. It will be named the CineLux Pavilion, according to CineLux President Paul Gunsky. “It will be the most spacious theater in San Jose,” Gunsky says.

The reopened Pavilion will show first-run movies similar to the chain’s other theaters, Gunsky adds. The chain’s other theaters, in Campbell and San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood, are currently showing such high-profile movies as “Enough” with Jennifer Lopez and “Insomnia” with Al Pacino.
