CHICAGO-Wrigley Field could be a hot spot as late as October. It’s highly unlikely the Cubs will be hosting any playoff games, but the team’s owners got an extension to Oct. 6 on a plans involving landmark status for the 88-year-old ballpark as well as Tribune Co.’s plans to expand the left- and right-field bleachers.

Tribune Co. has been looking to add 2,000 more seats to the second-smallest ballpark in the major leagues but have run into opposition from community groups who not only object to the additions, but have longstanding issues with crowd control, traffic and how many night games the team can play at Clark and Addison streets. The Cubs have scheduled 18 night games a year since installing lights in 1988, but they now want permission to play 30 games under the lights.

The team also wants to build a small retail venue next to the ballpark on a site now used as the players’ parking lot, but ownership of the property is in doubt.

The Cubs angered owners of surrounding multifamily buildings, including three-flats on Sheffield and Waveland avenues, by installing a green mesh screen atop the fence behind the current bleachers. Building owners have been renting out rooftops to groups.
