PHILADELPHIA-Salomon Smith Barney has extended and expanded its lease at One Liberty Place, a 1.2 million-sf building located at 1650 Market St. The financial services firm has leased the space directly from building owner Philadelphia Liberty Place LP, based in Delray Beach, FL.

William J. Hirschfeld of Cushman & Wakefield of Pennsylvania is the exclusive leasing agent for the property. Wayne Fisher and Craig Schuerle of Grubb & Ellis represented the tenant. According to Hirschfeld, Salomon Smith Barney has expanded its current space on the 44th and 45th floors “to the tune of 4,000 sf” and will now occupy 49,561 sf in the building. Hirschfeld would not reveal details of the transaction but says it is a long-term lease.

The building includes two floors of retail–the Shops at Liberty Retail Pavilion– and a Westin Hotel. Floor sizes are 24,000 sf. Office tenants at the property include Merrill Lynch, Cigna, Duane Morris & Heckscher and American Re.

At 945 ft, the 60-story One Liberty Place building, completed by developer Rouse and Associates in 1987, was the first building to break Philadelphia’s unofficial height limit of 491 feet, the height of the William Penn statue that crowns City Hall. The building’s Murphy/Jahn design is a sapphire blue steel-and-glass tower with a spire reminiscent of New York City’s Chrysler Building.
