MINNEAPOLIS-Target Corp. says it will build a 1.3-million-sf regional distribution center on a 143-acre site at the intersection of US Highway 75 and SW 57th Street in Topeka, KS. Construction on the building will begin this summer and is expected to be completed in summer 2004, according to the discount retailer.

Hiring for the facility will begin in spring 2004, which will start out with 650 employees, then add several hundred more employees over the first five years of the facility’s operation.

The Kansas Department of Commerce & Housing, as well as others in the community, spent “some time” working with Target for some time on this project, says KansasLt. Gov. and Commerce Secretary Gary Sherrer.

“Topeka provided a perfect fit for our new distribution center,” says Mitch Stover, senior vice president of distribution services for Target.

Each distribution center serves on average 85 to 90 stores in its region. Regional distribution centers receive shipments from suppliers, ship products directly to Target stores nationwide, and provide storage space for merchandise.

Target currently has 15 distribution centers in 14 states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, and New York.

Target will be “will be a superb addition to an already strong distribution cluster,” says Doug Kinsinger, president and CEO of the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce and GO Topeka.

There are 1,081 Target stores in 47 states.
