SAN FRANCISCO-Mercy Housing, one of the nation’s largest affordable housing providers, raised $800,000 for the cause of affordable housing last week at a fundraising gala, and will use the money to develop more affordable housing throughout the Mercy Housing System.

Mercy Housing, which was founded in 1981 by the Sister of Mercy in Omaha, handles housing development and property management for families who are economically poor. It also revitalizes distressed neighborhoods by attracting new investments and economic development opportunities.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the support we received for this event,” says Sister Lillian Murphy, RSM, President and CEO of Mercy Housing, Inc. “In particular, the support from the financial and real estate communities tells us that we must be doing something right.”

Franklin D. Raines, Chairman and CEO of Fannie Mae, was the honorary gala chairperson. “Fannie Mae is one of our most valuable partners and helped us develop nearly 2,000 units of housing in nine states,” says Sister Lillian. “Thanks to Fannie and Franklin’s leadership, Mercy is able to provide a quality home for more than 4,000 people.”

“When it comes to making a real difference for families and communities, Mercy Housing understands, first hand, what works, what is needed and where it is needed,” adds Mr. Raines.

The highlight of the evening was the premiere of a new Mercy Housing video featuring personal stories of Mercy residents and narrated by former vice presidential candidate, Geraldine Ferraro.
