AURORA, CO-Children’s Hospital chose John W. Shaw as executive projects director to oversee its $400-million move to build a new campus at Fitzsimons. Shaw, who heads the Opus Northwest office in Denver, will remain with the Minneapolis-based developer.

”The contract is with Opus Northwest,” Shaw tells GlobeSt.com. ”Word was starting to get out that I was leaving Opus Northwest, but that is not correct.”

Shaw says he is extremely flattered to be given the opportunity not only to be in charge of Children’s move to Fitzsimons, but to head the redevelopment of Children’s current Downtown hospital site. Children’s traces its roots in Denver to 1908.

The redevelopment of the current campus will be the largest in the Uptown neighborhood.

Shaw says he expects that Children’s Hospital will consume most of his time and attention over the next 12 to 18 months.

After that, he hopes that he can scale back his involvement. If all goes well, he will lighten his Children’s duties at about the time the local economy recovers, and he can return to Opus Northwest’s more typical office, retail and industrial projects.

During a career that has spanned more than 25 years, Shaw has developed more than 18 million sf of office, industrial, retail and civic projects.

The new Children’s Hospital at Fitzsimons will house 270 inpatient beds and will cover approximately 900,000 sf. Construction is expected to begin in 2003.

After the relocation of the main hospital in 2006, Children’s will continue to provide health care services in central Denver. They could include 24-hour urgent care, diagnostic services, short-stay beds, specialty consultation and clinics.
