LAS VEGAS, NV-A strike has been called by unionized workers at the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino in Downtown Las Vegas, the only casino that has not yet reached a tentative contract agreement with the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders’ and Beverage Dispensers’ Union Local 165.

The two unions, which represent more than 40,000 hotel and casino workers in Las Vegas, have been negotiating for nearly three months with casino owners here. Negotiations, which have centered mainly on health care issues and the treatment of housekeepers, have been settled at 35 other Las Vegas properties, located both Downtown and on the Strip.

Union workers had originally set a strike date of June 1, 2002, but postponed the deadline for 30 days in order to continue contract talks with some of the city’s smaller casino owners. In accordance with the new July 1 deadline, workers began picketing at the Golden Gate as of 6 p.m. yesterday.
