SEATTLE-Proposed changes in the state’s energy code will make windows in residential towers more energy efficient but developers argue that the new code will make units harder to sell or too expensive to build.

Vulcan Inc. is leading developers in a battle against the state energy code, saying that the new law will create obstacles in developing new residential buildings. The company recently filed a petition opposing the new rules for high-rise residential buildings.

While the developers say that they support energy efficiency, the new code will force them to build units with smaller windows that will not be attractive to tenants. It may also make some projects too expensive to be profitable. The petition claims that the new changes could reduce the size of windows by 50%.

State officials argue that the new rules, which are part of a series if regulation changes brought about during last year’s energy crisis, are an important step in energy conservation in high-rise residential buildings. The Building Code Council will make a final decision in December.
