SAN FRANCISCO-Bay Area communities are among many that will benefit from a $106.2 million federal grant to the state of California announced this week for housing and community development.

The grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, announced Tuesday, will be distributed among California cities and communities through several programs.

Community Development Block Grant funds, which are used by state and local governments for projects such as housing rehabilitation and to encourage economic development, have been awarded to local communities including Santa Cruz, Seaside, Gilroy, Watsonville, Alameda, Daly City, Fremont, Hayward, Livermore, Pleasanton, Santa Clara, San Jose, South San Francisco and Union City. The largest such grant, for $12.7 million, went to San Jose.

Some communities also received Home Investment Partnership funds, which are dedicated to creating affordable housing developments and assisting first-time homebuyers. Santa Cruz received $442,000 through this program, Santa Clara $531,000 and San Jose $4.3 million.

The grants announced this week are in addition to $48.7 million in federal grants for 16 California cities and communities announced earlier this month, more than $20 million of which went to Bay Area communities.
