WAYLAND, MA-While the 721-unit residential complex National Development has proposed developing in a 170-acre former sand and gravel pit in Framingham barely crosses Wayland’s border, the size and proximity of the project–one of Framingham’s largest–has prompted town officials here to voice their concerns to the Newton, MA-based developer and to its neighbor.

Joe Laydon, Wayland’s town planner, tells GlobeSt.com that a small piece of the parcel is officially in his town but that is not his major worry. It is the anticipated increase in traffic that has people here on edge. “We are concerned about a number of intersections and we would like additional traffic studies,” says Laydon. He notes that National Development has already identified one intersection in Wayland that will require signalization if this project gets built.

Other concerns include the increase of use of the conservation land that abuts the project as well as the potential impact of the project on emergency services and town wells. Town officials have been meeting with representatives of the developer and Framingham town officials. Laydon says that the town’s board of selectman is in the process of writing up a formal letter listing its concerns, which it will send to Framingham officials.
