SAN DIEGO-Construction has started on a new 44,500-sf, $11 million animal care center in Mission Valley.

The shelter is a joint venture between the San Diego Humane Society and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals located on 2.5 acres at 5500 Gaines St. The center will anchor the San Diego Campus for Animal Care, with assistance from the county Department of Animal Services.

The second phase of the project comes more than two years after the county’s new Kroc-Copley Animal Shelter, which was completed and opened two months ago. The just-started animal care facility is slated for completion next spring.

The center will include an adoption gallery for dogs, cats and other small animals that will house up to 60 dogs and 60 cats, a bathing and grooming area, a veterinary medical center and surgery center, a large auditorium, classrooms and other facilities.

“The campus is central to our efforts of working with our partners … to end the unnecessary euthanasia of adoptable animals,” says Dr. Mark Goldstein, president of the San Diego SPCA and Humane Society.

Keeton Construction is handling construction of the project, with Don Fitzpatrick as project manager. George Miers & Associates of Moraga, CA is the project architect.
