DENVER-Local restaurateur Steve Naples is looking to grow his popular, homegrown Heidi’s Brooklyn Deli. He opened the first store in northwest Denver in 1994 and has grown it into a $1.2-million-a-year business.

A New Jersey native, Naples named his deli after his wife, who grew up in Brooklyn. He is getting ready to open his third Heidi’s along South Broadway, just south of the $1-billion redevelopment of the 50-acre former Gates rubber plant that is being converted into a transportation-anchored, high-density mixed-use development.

Naples bought his most recent building for a bargain $270,000. He had offered $320,000 before Sept. 11, but the owners who were running a coffee shop there wanted $380,000.

In addition, he is looking to franchise Heidi’s, as well as a smaller Soup N’ Juice store.

Harry Kennison, a former marketing expert at Qwest Communications, is Naples’ 25% partner in the plan to open franchises. Kennison wants to open Heidi’s in a number of urban redevelopments in the Denver and Boulder area, as well as in other cities, such as Lincoln, NE.

Details of the franchises, such as the cost and fees, likely will be available by the end of the year.
