SAN FRANCISCO-Cushman & Wakefield, Inc. has been awarded the facilities management contract for Sun Microsystem’s national portfolio of office and industrial properties, which includes 11 million sf in more than 220 properties.

The real estate services firm’s contract, which is effective in October 2002, includes a full ranges of facilities management services, such as a call center, mission critical site management, preventive maintenance, accounting and administration, engineering, moves, distance collaboration, environment and health safety conditions and energy management.

The national assignment includes major office campuses in Santa Clara, Menlo Park, Palo Alto and San Diego, as well as several campuses throughout the nation. The account will be serviced from the San Francisco Bay Area.

For the past seven years, Sun Microsystems outsourced its facilities management to Johnson Controls. According to Jim Arcee, Director of Asset Services in Northern California for Cushman & Wakefield, Sun Microsystems was attracted to Cushman & Wakefield for a number of reasons, including its strong reputation for leadership and technology.

Arcee tells Globest.com that Sun was excited about the firm’s use of Business Integration Group, a Web-based property and facilities management solution. Cushman & Wakefield is a majority owner in “BIG” and one of few companies that use the technology. BIG’s Web-enabled tools will provide information that will allow Sun and Cushman & Wakefield to measure and manage operating and financial performance on a round-the-clock basis.

Earlier this year, Microsoft Corp. eliminated Johnson Controls’ Pacific Northwest maintenance contract, which totaled some 8 million sf, and went out to bid on a full-service management contract that would include maintenance and cover all Microsoft facilities nationwide, which adds about 2 million sf to the Northwest total. Microsoft reportedly sought bids from several of the leading corporate management companies, eventually choosing Grubb & Ellis.
