VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-The six-year, $100 million redevelopment of the two-decade old 1.3 million-sf Lynnhaven Mall nears completion with the grand opening of a new 180,000-sf Dillard’s today. With this opening, the Little Rock, AR-based chain increases retail space by 50%. Its former Lynnhaven home, which it had occupied since making its debut in the mall four years ago, was a 120,000-sf space that had been occupied by a Belk department store. The new Dillard’s will employ a staff of 230.

The 21-year-old shopping center’s massive upgrade will be complete by the end of 2003. The last bit of the makeover entails the development of an approximately 18-screen AMC movie megaplex to replace AMC’s existing 8-screen theater just outside the mall.

An earlier phase of the multi-million dollar endeavor included the addition of a 630-space parking deck to augment the mall’s 6,500-space parking facilities. The city of Virginia Beach has committed about $11.5 million to Lynnhaven’s redevelopment.
