MARYSVILLE, WA-The City of Marysville is being read the riot act by 1000 Friends of Washington, a Seattle-based “smart growth” organization.

At issue is the city’s plan to develop 350 acres of mostly vacant farm land at the north end of town with commercial and industrial uses. The land and vision for the area has been subbed the South Smokey Point-North Marysville Subarea Plan.

1000 Friends says the plan is inadequate and a full-blown Environmental Impact Statement should be required. It is appealing an earlier city decision that developers would have to analyze the environmental impacts on a project by project basis.

The land and vision for the area has been dubbed the South Smokey Point-North Marysville Subarea Plan. 1000 Friends made their voice heard on the same day a public hearing on the plan was held by the city’s planning commission.

The planning commission will review the appeal by 1000 friends–which cites more than 30 deficiencies in the city’s plan–at its regular meeting this week. An appeal hearing has not been scheduled.
