DETROIT-Lt. Governor Dick Posthumus, a candidate for governor in the November election, has said the state should move to purchase property development rights to 390,000 acres in Quinnesec in the Upper Peninsula in order to preserve the habitat. It was announced earlier this year that the land, currently owned by a Hawaii-based charitable trust, would soon be put up for sale and available for private development.

“The natural wilderness of the Upper Peninsula is not just a Michigan treasure, but a national treasure,” Posthumus says. “The purchase of the development rights to this land gives Michigan the great opportunity to ensure that lakes, streams and forests across the region will remain available for people to enjoy first hand, not just see on a postcard or from their car window.”

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently submitted an application to the Natural Resources Trust Fund for funds to purchase the property development rights to the 390,000 acres owned by the Kamehameha Schools Trust. Posthumus announced he would submit a letter to the NRTF requesting the dollars be made available for the purchase of those rights.
