SATSOP, WA-Low-cost power has prompted yet another stoppage in power plant construction in the Northwest.

Duke Energy has stopped construction of its $300 million power plant. Work on the 650-megawatt plant, which began last October, was about 40% complete. Completion for this facility, and 10 others in the western United States, was slated for 2003. Company officials say they are reviewing their options, but it is uncertain at this time when — and if — construction on the Satsop plant will resume.

GlobeSt.com reported last week that Mirant Corp. similarly has halted construction on a $250-million energy plant at the City of Longview, Wash.’s Mint Farm industrial park. Construction on the 270-megawatt, combined-cycle gas fired power plant began in October 2001. Completion was scheduled for June 2003. The 11-acre project is approximately 34% complete.
