Murdoch Weighs Up Wapping Move

LONDON-Rupert Murdoch is planning to move his newspapers from Wapping in London Docklands.

LONDON-Rupert Murdoch is considering the relocation of his newspapers from Wapping in London Docklands.

News International’s original move to Wapping was the first of a major newspaper and it broke the historic base of the UK’s media in Fleet Street. Since then most of the country’s national newspapers have relocated out of the West End because it is seen as too expensive.

At the time land in Docklands was cheap. But the success of Canary Wharf has seen office rents and land values in the area skyrocket. News International believes better value can be achieved by selling the site and moving to a cheaper location.

Murdoch has alreadly commissioned Lord Rogers, the architect of the Millennium Dome, to redevelop a 40-acre site at Deptford in south London.
