HARBOR CITY, CA-Construction has been completed on Kaiser Permanente’snew $20 million Parkview Medical Office Building, a project of McCarthyBuilding Companies Inc. at Kaiser’s Harbor City Medical Center Campus. This new building, one of six that McCarthy has underway or completedfor Kaiser at the Harbor City Medical Center over the last five years,is at Pacific Coast Highway and Vermont Avenue.

The three-story, 106,000-sf structure houses several general exam roomsand numerous procedure rooms, allowing for ophthalmology, optometry, optical sales, pharmacy, urology, gastroenterology, a surgery clinic, oncology, care management, a pain clinic and diagnostic imagingservices. The new building replaces an adjacent existing medical officebuilding on the campus. The old building is scheduled to be demolishedand replaced by landscaping, architectural concrete hardscape and aparking lot, which is due to be finished in December.

Designed by Lee Burkhart Liu Inc. of Santa Monica, the new buildingfeatures a steel brace frame and a cement plaster and glass exteriorskin. Its southern side includes a glass curtain wall covering thesecond and third floors.

Although the project was completed as scheduled, McCarthy says the jobpresented challenges. Digging the foundation in January 2001, theconstruction company discovered landfill debris that had to be removed, some of it by hand where heavy equipment couldn’t be used, delaying thework by about two months, according to McCarthy project manager KhatchigTchapadarian.

The medical building is one of 30 projects McCarthy has under way or hascompleted since 1991 for Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser, which was founded50 years ago as one of the country’s first health maintenanceorganizations by industrialist Henry Kaiser and Dr. Sidney Garfield. Theorganization was established initially to provide health care for Kaisershipyard and steel workers but later was opened to public enrollment andnow has more than 8 million members.
