BEDFORD, NH-In a fairly close vote, town residents have rejected a proposal to acquire a 38-acre parcel by the town’s school district for the purposes of building a school sometime in the future.

Karen White, Bedford’s planning director, tells GlobeSt.com that 53% of the voters did not want to see the school district acquire the site. A 60% vote in favor of the purchase was required for the deal to go through.

The property is owned by the Flatley Co., which had proposed developing a 264,000-sf shopping mall on it. But that idea met with such fierce local opposition that the company agreed to sell the property to the town’s school district for $3.9 million. White says that the land was appraised at $11.2 million.

Flatley has made it clear that if the town rejects the sale offer, they will move forward with building the shopping center on the site. Among the proposed tenants for the center are a Super Stop & Shop and a Target store.
