ORANGE COUNTY, CA-The number of new permits issued for apartments and the value of that construction climbed considerably during the first seven months of this year, but the dollar volume of commercial building construction dipped in the county, according to newly released figures from the non-profit Construction Industry Research Board.

The board, which is based in Burbank, says 2,344 new multifamily permits were issued in Orange County through the end of July, up from 1,334 in the first seven months of 2001. The aggregate value of the multifamily permits was $196.2 million, up from $121.1 million at the same time a year ago.

The board’s report does not list the number of permits for commercial and industrial building construction, but it says the volume of construction dropped to $698.6 million for the first seven months of this year, compared with $869.5 million last year. The figures include offices, retail stores, hotels, motels, warehouses, manufacturing facilities and other commercial and industrial buildings, as well as additions and alterations to commercial properties.
